Bicyclist killed by hit-and-run driver

Updated: Monday, January 20 2014, 03:07 PM CST

WICHITA, Kansas -- A woman was killed while riding her bike late Thursday night but the truck that hit her left the scene.

The accident happened just before 10:00 at Pawnee and Oliver. Police say a man and a woman were riding their bikes northbound on the outside lane of Oliver when a truck came up behind them and hit the woman.

The woman, said to be in her 30’s, died on the scene.  The other bicyclist was not hurt.

Police say this is a time when people really need to pay attention.

“With these weather conditions, with the fog, be mindful that it reduces visibility and to slow down,” said Sgt. Jose Saucedo, Wichita Police Department. “And for people on bicycles, also, be mindful that even with good equipment on bicycles to be visible, it’s still tough.”

Witnesses say the driver never stopped. Police are crediting another driver who saw the accident for following that person and getting their information. Police found the vehicle involved and are investigating.
