Wheelchair ramp stolen from apartment complex

Updated: Tuesday, December 3 2013, 06:34 PM CST

WICHITA, Kansas - Brenda Stoneley relies on her wheelchair ramp to get in and out of her home.

Just over a week ago, her ramp was stolen from her apartment in the 400 block of West Pawnee.

"We as independent people think we can do about everything, and then, when they do stuff like that, it shows that you can't."

Neighbors say theft at the apartment isn't new, but this case is on a different level.

"Someone who takes something like that, it is pretty low to do," said Lt. Doug Nolte, Wichita Police Department.

Along with a caretaker, Brenda relies on her sister, April, to help her out and having to replace an expensive ramp is even more difficult on a fixed income.

"She didn't really have the money to get it in the first place. Then, to have to replace it, it's tough," said April Bergamo, Brenda's sister.

April says the ramp costs about $450 dollars. It is about two thirds of Brenda's monthly income.

Brenda thinks whoever took her ramp must have really needed something.

Investigators believe it was stolen for scrap metal.

April says Brenda didn't deserve something like that to happen to her.

"She would give you the shirt off her back. She is very loving, very considerate. I love her dearly," said April.

Now, Brenda has to make the tough decision on whether or not she feels comfortable staying at the apartment.

"I don't know, I don't know how it's gonna go."
