Wichita bakery closing in February

Updated: Friday, December 13 2013, 08:24 AM CST

WICHITA, Kansas - Bimbo Bakeries announced that it will close its bakery located at 2530 Southeast Drive in Wichita.

The bakery will close February 24, 2014.

The bakery, which produces bread and buns and currently employs 118 people, will shift production to other facilities.

"This was a difficult decision because of the highly capable team of associates at the Wichita Bakery," said Didier Moleres, Regional Vice President of Operations for BBU's Central region. "However, after an extensive assessment, we concluded that the age of the equipment and building and the outdated level of technology make the bakery unable to compete effectively in the marketplace going forward."

The changes will not impact Bimbo's customer service or the availability of its fresh-baked products, which will continue to be distributed across the state.

Human resources representatives met with all affected employees and union representatives to discuss severance and other benefits, as well as resources available to assist them.

"We value and respect our associates and are working to support them during this transition," said Moleres.
