Major Leagues may have to wait for US-Cuba thaw to bring island talent
Baseball fans who dream that improved relations between the U.S. and Cuba will soon unlock the communist state's deep and largely untapped reservoir of talented ballplayers for the American major leagues should probably put a variation on an old adage:

They ain’t coming over ’til they’re coming over.

NFL Game Capsules - Week 16

Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Cam Newton accounted for two touchdowns and the Carolina Panthers picked up a crucial win to set up a winner-take-all NFC South showdown next week. Newton's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Stewart in the fourth quarter was the difference, and Carolina topped the Cleveland Browns, 17-13, on Sunday. The scoring strike to Stewart, which capped a 7-play, 66-yard drive, came less than three minutes after the Browns took their first lead on Brian Hoyer's 81-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jordan Cameron. Hoyer replaced Johnny Manziel late in the first half after the rookie exited with a hamstring injury. The Panthers (6-8-1) will travel to Atlanta next week with the division on the line. Whoever wins that game will clinch the NFC South and host a playoff game.

National Hockey League Game Capsules

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarome Iginla scored the decisive goal in the ninth round of the shootout as the Colorado Avalanche edged the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 at Joe Louis Arena. Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene scored on Colorado's first two chances in the tiebreaker, but the Red Wings stayed alive with goals from Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar in rounds two and three. Detroit's Petr Mrazek and Colorado's Calvin Pickard then matched one another save for save until Iginla's goal to begin the ninth round. Pickard then made a right pad save on Brendan Smith to secure the victory. Pickard finished with 34 saves for the Avalanche, who have won back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 22-25 and concluded their road trip at 2-0-1. They have played beyond regulation in four of their last five games, going 3-0-2 over that stretch. Mrazek, starting in place of Jimmy Howard (lower-body injury), made 22 saves for a Detroit team winless in its last six games (0-2-4). The Red Wings have totaled six goals during their current skid.
