More construction set at Mid-Continent Airport

WICHITA, Kansas - Construction continues on the new parking garage and terminal at Mid-Continent Airport.

Officials say travelers will need to start arriving early to prepare for traffic delays.

That includes Kenneth Ray Ardoin with ABC Taxi.

"It will take longer for the cab to pick them up and get them where they're going for their business meeting or whatever. That will be an inconvenience for them too."

Construction workers are beginning to install 90 feet of piling that will serve as a support system for the parking garage that broke ground this summer.

As construction continues, the airport is having to make some adjustments.

"The concern we have is that we have to close a sidewalk that connects the parking lot to the terminal building, and we have to move traffic over so that the contractor can work," said John Oswald, Wichita Mid-Continent Airport Planning Manager.

Oswald says the work being done will cause traffic to be narrowed down to one lane.

"The disruption should last about 10 minutes each time."

Oswald says while it poses an inconvenience, it's necessary in pushing the project forward.

"The activity is crucial in order to get the piling installed for the canopies to come later in the project."

Oswald says with weather permitting, the piling work will be finished by the beginning of next week.

But until that time, Oswald is urging travelers to arrive at the airport two hours ahead of their flight to avoid any issues.

The new terminal and the parking garage are expected to open in early 2015.

The terminal design and the elements inside are supposed to remind people of Wichita's great aviation heritage.
