Investigation continues into body found near Augusta

AUGUSTA, Kansas - The Butler County Sheriff says a woman is in custody after a decomposing body was found in the backyard of a house in the 9600 block of SW 110th Monday.

It is southwest of Augusta.

Sheriff Kelly Herzet say officers found the body after a neighbor called asking for a welfare check at the home.

On Tuesday morning, detectives spent most of the time processing the crime scene and gathering evidence in the garage.

Officials say it could take weeks to identify the person.

"We are in the process today of going to the autopsy with some fingerprints. Hopefully, that will identify the body. We got an idea, but waiting for forensic center," said Sheriff Kelly Herzet.

Herzet says the body is so badly decomposed that investigators are unsure if it's a woman or man, but he believes it is an adult. The body was not buried but efforts were made to hide it.

Shortly after, police arrested Susan May.

She is facing voluntary manslaughter, criminal desecration, and obstructing justice.

Officials say May had previous run-ins with the law.

"I don't know if she is married right now. I happened to know when I was out here in 2000 working a case where she was involved with shooting a boyfriend.  He was just a live in boyfriend at the time," added Herzet.

May is scheduled to appear in front of a judge Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.
