Copper criminals hit cemetery grave sites

WICHITA, Kansas - We've seen copper stolen from irrigation systems, air conditioning units and even old homes. Now graves are being hit.

"The copper vase was taken from the grave site," explains Wichita Police Department Lt. Doug Nolte. "Yes, we actually got a report on that. And the woman says there are other graves with a vase missing. This appears to not be the only case."

A woman went to visit her daughter's grave at the Maple Grove Cemetery this week and noticed the theft.

Nolte says the woman explained the copper vase was for flowers, and it was even chained to the grave.

"It was reported to us that it appears someone took a bolt cutter or something like that and cut the chain," says Nolte. "Our other concern is there might be more of these vases that were taken. We've only had one police report so, obviously, if there is someone that wants to report that, they need to check the grave site of their loved one and report that to 911."
