Beware of fraud from gas company imposter

WICHITA, Kansas - The Wichita Police Department has reported that they have received alerts about an over the phone fraud that is going around.

Several people have said they have received calls from a man named Alex White with the gas company and have been told their gas is going to be shut off unless they make a payment with their Green Dot card.

The card is a Visa or Mastercard that can be loaded with money and releasing the card numbers will allow the entire funds to be withdrawn.

"This is a fraud so callers that are getting calls from utility companies need to verify who is calling them and if in doubt call both Westar and Kansas Gas Company," said  Wichita Police Department spokesman Doug Nolte.

The WPD does not believe anyone has fallen for the fraud yet but several cases have been reported.

It was emphasized that the public should know that a phone call to say your gas will be shut off is not standard protocol for gas companies during the winter.

"They also need to report these [calls] to the police department as well so we can keep track of what's going on," said Nolte.
