Wichita plane crash victims to be honored

TOPEKA, Kansas - Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau of Wichita is sponsoring a resolution on the Senate floor Thursday, January 16, remembering the victims of the Piatt plane crash in Wichita.

A jet tanker from McConnell Air Force Base crashed into the neighborhood of 20th and Piatt Streets on January 16, 1965, killing 7 air crewmen and 23 residents.

"This tragedy has been recognized by the Kansas Historical Society as the worst non-natural disaster occurring in Kansas history," said Sen. Faust-Goudeau. "I helped organize a committee in 2004 to create a public memorial site to honor those who perished. We raised money over several years to erect a monument and install commemorative bricks and benches where family members can sit and reflect. We unveiled and dedicated the Piatt Memorial Park in July 2007."

A gathering of survivors of the plane crash and other will meet at the Piatt Memorial Park on January 16, 2014, at 1 p.m. to remember the 30 people who died in the crash. The public is welcome to attend.
