Earthquake reported NW of Caldwell

CALDWELL, Kansas - The U.S. Geological Survey reports an earthquake hit northwest of Caldwell early Monday.

The 3.9 magnitude happened just after 3 a.m. 11 miles northwest of Caldwell or 38 miles southwest of Wichita.

Officials say no damage was reported.

Back in December, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred in the same area.

Small earthquakes in southern Kansas have become more common, with more than two dozen recorded over the past two years. The area has been the site of increased oil and gas drilling since 2011. Scientists disagree on whether that causes the earthquakes.
