Olney wins 65th annual Pancake Race

LIBERAL, Kansas Runners in Olney, England are winners in the 65th running of the International Pancake Day Race.

Olneys Devon Byrne got her third win over Liberal with a time of 55.6 seconds, breaking her previous time.

Summer Parsons won the Liberal leg of the race with a time of 63.5 seconds.

The race is part of four-day festival in Liberal.

Liberal still leads the competition with 36 wins to Olneys 28.

Every year women clad in aprons and head scarves from Olney and the city of Liberal run their respective legs of the race with a pancake in their pan, flipping it at the beginning and end of the race.

According to legend, the Olney race started in 1445 when a harried housewife arrived at church on Shrove Tuesday still clutching her frying pan with a pancake in it.

Liberal challenged Olney to a friendly international competition in 1950 after seeing photos of the race in a magazine.
